Friday--Miss Calderone's class

Today our day began writing our final draft for our riddles and correcting our D.L.P. We then moved on to complete the last 3 centers. After that we took our spelling test followed by our reading test. We then spent the rest of the morning learning about the suffixes -ful and -less. We attached them to base words to make new words and then figured out their meanings. We then cut out words with the two suffixes and matched them with their correct definitions. Overall the week has been VERY noisy. Unfortunately we lost celebration day today due to all of the noise and students not following directions. After lunch we silent read and then had math. In my classroom we reviewed all of the shapes and learned about 2-D shapes we would get if we traced some of the 3-D shapes. We completed a couple workbook pages and finished math by going on a geometry website and picking out the correct 3-D shapes. We had a blast! After math we headed straight to music. Our day ended by writing a paragraph about 3 things to do next week, and 3 things NOT to do next week. Hopefully next week will be better. We also celebrated a student's birthday by eating some huge cookies!

The homework for the weekend is to get your social studies test signed and if you are in my math class you have a math sheet (19-3) to do.

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we had a lot of fun reviewing abbreviations. The children were excited to learn some abbreviations of states. We'll have to learn more in the future!! We took our spelling and reading tests today. We also completed three centers and our DLP. In Science, we started reading a mini-book on teeth. This afternoon, we learned that 3-Dimensional shapes have 2-Dimensional shapes on their faces. We watched a video clip about 3-D shapes, too. My class does not have homework, but those who go to Miss Calderone do have one page to finish this weekend. At the end of the day, we went to gym class.

Thursday--Miss Calderone's class

Our day started as usual with our D.L.P. and journal. After sharing we reviewed antonyms. We made a list of words on the board and then found their antonyms together. We then worked with a partner to figure out antonyms on a worksheet and then went over the answers as a class. After that we worked on our riddles. We had time to draw the pictures of our riddles and work on our final drafts. Some students finished everything! We then completed 3 centers. Our day ended with social studies. We took our social studies test and in our spare time finished a grammar sheet. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then had math. We reviewed what we learned yesterday and then were introduced to the shapes square, triangle, pentagon, rectangle, and parallelogram. We counted their sides AND angles! We worked in our math book and then went over the answers together. After math we had science where we watched a short movie on the human body. Our day ended with P.E.

The homework for tonight is to read Cool Ali/study, finish your spelling packet/study, and finish your riddle picture (if you haven't already).

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we practiced writing sentences using words that end in -f or -ves. The students do have one page of spelling homework. We re-read the story Cool Ali in groups. We have a scavenger hunt to finish tonight. We corrected our DLP and made a web with words that tell how many. We started an English page in class, but they need to be finished for homework. We completed two rotations of centers today. In Science, we talked about Dental Health. We watched a Power Point and discussed how we can take care of our teeth. In math, we started Geometry today. We looked at different 3-Dimensional shapes and found how many vertices, edges, and faces each had. The students have one page to finish for homework. In Social Studies, we reviewed the vocabulary words, finished our vocabulary cards, discussed the word "barter" and re-read the lessons for our test tomorrow. A note will be coming home today with your student that specifies which pages to study. At the end of the day, the children went to the library.

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

Today we began our day correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our February journals about whatever was on our minds. After sharing we began rough drafts of our riddles. They're looking awesome so far! We worked for a bit and then learned a new cursive letter; p. After writing we completed 3 centers. Our day ended with social studies. We reviewed for the test by answering some questions together and with a partner. I hope everyone is ready for the test tomorrow! After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then went to math. We began our geometry unit! We learned about 2-D versus 3-D objects and learned about a rectangular prism, cone, cube, sphere, and cylinder! We talked about the amount of faces, edges and vertices. The facbe is the flat part of an object, the edge is where the faces/sides meet, and the vertices are the "points" on an object. With a partner we walked around the room trying to find some objects and then listed some on the board. After math we went to library and finished the day with science. We wrote a paragraph on how to keep our teeth clean and healthy to finish up our dental unit. Our next science unit will be the human body!!!!

The homework for tonight is to read Cool Ali, math 19-1, sign math test, study S.S., finish rough draft (most got this done in class), and complete grammar pg. 134. I did give some time at the end of the day to do some homework since it's a bit more than usual.

Tuesday--Miss Calderone's class

Today we started our day correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our February journals. We used the word wall words in a story/paragraph. We then were given an index card. On one side we wrote a noun and on the other we wrote 3 adjectives describing that noun. We will turn these into riddles tomorrow. We then reviewed words that show how many by completing a web together and independently working on a grammar sheet. After going over the answers we learned a new cursive letter, j. After practicing we learned the vocabulary for the new story and read Cool Ali. We then finished literacy with 2 centers. We finished our morning with social studies. We read the rest of Unit 3 and discussed the words trade, transportation, and barter. We filled them out on our vocabulary page and took it home to help study. After lunch we went straight to math. We reviewed chapter 18 and then took our test. After a short time we went to art and finished our day with science. We've been discussing dental care and finished our PowerPoint on teeth. We discussed everything from how to keep them healthy to what to do if an adult tooth falls out. We then worked on a dental packet with a partner.

The homework for today is to read Cool Ali and study for the Social Studies test.

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we wrote about what we would do if it was 82 degrees out. Oh, how we long for that nice weather! The students had such great ideas about what they would like to do if they could play outside! Then, we analyzed words that end in -f. When made plural, the f gets changed to a v and then we add -es. We completed a workbook page and the students have one page of spelling homework. We also talked about antonyms today. We learned that antonym means the opposite. During guided reading today, we had to give antonyms for many adjectives. We discussed the vocabulary words for our story this week. Then, we read Cool Ali. The students liked to imagine, along with Ali, that the weather was different than it really is. We corrected our DLP and reviewed adjectives in English. The students do have a workbook page to finish for homework. We had two centers today. In Social Studies, we are wrapping up our Unit 3 and will take our test on Thursday. In math today, we reviewed for and took our test on measurement. We will begin Geometry tomorrow. No math homework for today! We learned the lowercase cursive letter p today. At the end of the day, the students went to art class.

Monday--Miss Calderone's class

What a fast day! We started our day with music and P.E. right away. When we came back we corrected our D.L.P. and wrote in our February journals. We then learned how to make singular words that end with the "f" sound into plural form; change the f to a v and add es. We made a list on the board and then took our spelling pre-test. The students did a great job! After that we practiced singular to plural with a partner and then went over the words together. We moved on to learn a new cursive letter, r. We practiced writing for a bit and then learned our new centers. Before starting centers, we talked about words that tell how many and looked at a big list together. We then finished our morning with 2 centers. After lunch and recess we read Harry Potter for a bit...we're almost done! We then moved onto math where we learned about what tool to measure temperature; a thermometer! We read the temperature on our own thermometers and then got a cup of cool water to dip our thermometers in. We watched as the mercury fell and then read our thermometers again after 1 minute. It was really fun! We then discussed different ways to measure and when you would use a thermometer, balance scale, measuring cup, and ruler. We moved on to social studies. We reviewed the two types of accounts by completing one side of our homework and then learned how to read a pie chart. The other side of the sheet is homework. Our day ended with media center.

The homework tonight is to sign the reading test, complete math 18-6, social studies 32, read Cool Ali, and study for social studies test. Wow, that seems like a lot but the worksheets will not take more than 10-15 minutes combined. Please see the social studies note home about the test on Thursday.

Friday--Miss Calderone's class

We had a fast day! We started out correcting the rest of our D.L.P and then headed straight into centers. After completing the last 3 centers we took our spelling followed by our reading tests. We played Pictionary/charades in the middle to review the vocabulary words. Our morning ended with social studies. We talked about savings and checking accounts and had a very in depth discussion about how to use them. We also reviewed using a compass rose. After lunch a couple students read their own stories and then we read Harry Potter for a bit. We then had math. We reviewed all of the words for capacity and then learned two more; gram and kilogram. We were able to hold weights that equaled one gram and one kilogram so we can get a better idea of what they felt like. We then compared and estimated weights using a balance. We had a really great time! We finished our homework in class and had enough time to correct it. We ended math reviewing time. After math we headed to music and finished our day with Celebration Day. We wrote facts about whales and put it in the middle of a whale picture. Check them out in our hallway!

The homework for the weekend is to read Cool Ali and complete social studies page 29/30. Also, finish the whales if you didn’t in class.

Thursday in Mrs.Bognetti's Room

Go USA! Our flags are finished! Each student chose one country that is competing in the Olympics and made a replica of the flag. They are all displayed together, around our American flag in support of our athletes. What an exciting time! Please help your student cut out articles from magazines or newspapers showing the results of competitions to add to our bulletin board. This morning we talked about compound words and broke them up into syllables. We also practiced our spelling words. The students have one page of spelling homework. Then, we reviewed our vocabulary and word wall words for the week. We talked about inferencing and completed a workbook page. The students have one page of english homework to practice finding adjectives (words that describe nouns). We completed our DLP for today, as well. Then, we got through two centers today and had Book Buddies before lunch. This afternoon, we learned about liters and milliliters. If you have anything in your refrigerator that is measured in liters, please show your child. I showed them a medicine dropper that held mL. They couldn't believe how small it was! We finished our math homework and I collected it. In Social Studies, the students re-read our lesson in pairs and then worked on a sheet that asked about different types of bank accounts and earning money. They do need to finish it for homework. At the end of the day, they went to music class.

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

What a busy day! Today was like a Monday since we had no school this Monday so our day started with Music and P.E. As soon as we got back we corrected our D.L.P. We then jumped right into grammar. We reviewed adjectives and completed a sheet together. We then broke off into partners to complete a sheet which we later corrected together. By the end of the week I hope we are adjective experts! We then finished our day with 3 centers. I wanted to spend a little more time on centers because our art center involved us using water colors so I know we needed a bit more time for that fun activity! After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then had math. We reviewed gallons, pints, quarts, cups, and fluid ounces and then learned about an ounce and pound. We felt the difference between the two and then used a scale to estimate whether objects around the classroom were heavier or lighter than the ounce and pound. We completed some math book pages together and then independently got started on the homework. Well, the students finished so quickly that we corrected it in class and have no math homework tonight (only those in my math class). We then moved onto science where we began learning about oral health. Our day ended with Media Center.

The homework tonight is to read Dear Mr. Blueberry, remember to fill in that Read to Succeed sheet, and bring in some box tops!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning was crazy! Since we have a four day week AND we had an assembly (Jane Addams and the Hull House), we had to rush through a lot of things! First, we briefly talked about words with -oo and -ue. Then, we completed a workbook page and we introduced this week's spelling words. The students have one page of spelling homework. We talked about inferencing and discussed this week's vocabulary words. After, we read the story Dear Mr. Blueberry. Most children did not know what a postmark was. I showed them a sample of one, but if you have some mail with a postmark you could show your child, I think it would really help. We worked on DLP, but did not have a chance to correct it. This afternoon, we talked about capacity (ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons) in detail. The students have one page of math homework. It is difficult, so your child may need some help! At the end of the day, the students went to art class.

Tuesday--Miss Calderone's class

Welcome back! I wanted to first thank you for all of your kindness this past Valentine's Day. I received many wonderful items and enjoyed splurging on chocolate over the weekend! Today we had a very fast day. We started our day correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our February journal. We shared fast and then learned the new chunks for this week: -oo and -ue (both make the same sound). We took our spelling pretest and then went to an assembly! After returning we learned the new vocabulary for the story and read Dear Mr. Blueberry. We really like this story. We ended the morning with 2 centers. After lunch we switched right away for math. We reviewed capacity and practiced conversions. We completed a page in our math book. Next was art and after art we ended the day with science. We read a couple pages in our science book and completed a worksheet together.

The homework for tonight is to read Dear Mr. Blueberry and complete math 18-2. Also, continue reading! The read to succeed sheet is due at the end of the week (that's the sheet for the Great America ticket). Remember you can count your minutes toward the Ozzie reading incentive and the Harry Potter incentive program in class!

Thursday--Miss Calderone's class

What a busy day! Today we started by correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our February journal. After sharing we reviewed the vocabulary by completing a practice sheet with a partner. We then regrouped and went over the answers. We moved on to review cause and effect. We read How I Spent My Summer Vacation and found some examples of cause and effect. We then had a visitor that brought me flowers and the class small chocolate cupcakes…mmmmmm! After that we reviewed adjectives by completing a friendly letter together and identifying all of the describing words. That helped us prepare for us to write our own friendly letter to a friend! We took some time to write a letter and then finished our morning with 3 centers. After lunch our mystery reader came in and read us an awesome Fly Guy book! We then had one of our own students read a couple stories. After that we had math where we started learning about capacity. We looked at different sized containers and estimated whether we thought the capacity was more or less. We then used water to fill containers to their maximum capacity. We completed the homework in class. We then had science where we took our chapter 10 science test! Our day ended with P.E.

The homework for tonight is to finish the math packet, complete the spelling packet/study, read “Summer Vacation”/study, and get your math test signed.

After that, we completed our DLP and reviewed adjectives (words that describe nouns, such as colors, sizes and shapes). The students have one workbook page for homework. We completed two centers today. In Social Studies, we read about Florence Nightengale. We also learned about using a compass rose to tell directions on a map. The students have one page of Social Studies homework. After lunch, we had a Mystery Reader. Then, in math, we used our knowledge of measurement to problem solve. The students had 20 minutes to work with a partner in class, but need to finish that and a math facts worksheet for homework tonight. Don't forget that the math facts subtraction packet is due on Friday! Also, we will be having a Science Test on Thursday. A note about Valentine's Day is coming home today.

Tuesday--Miss Calderone's class

Our day started out by correcting our DLP and writing in our February journals. We tried to write words with the -oy and -oi chunks. After sharing we made a list of all the words we heard that included the chunks. We then reviewed the vocabulary for the story and listened to/discussed How I Spent My Summer Vacation. We spent a little time reviewing synonyms and then got to see a short clip of a real matador! We then moved on to writing our final drafts for our pen pal letters. We had some trouble getting the formatting down, but after working really hard finally got it. Some students need to finish their letters for homework. We then completed two centers and finished our morning with social studies. We learned about tax and discussed the purpose of taxes. I passed around a receipt so the students could actually see getting taxed in action! We read some pages in our social studies book before lunch. After lunch our mystery reader came in and read us a story that we all really enjoyed! We didn't want to go back to our desks! We had to move on though because next was math! We reviewed some measurements and completed some workbook pages together. The chapter test is tomorrow! To study please review that 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches, and 1 meter = 100 centimeters. The students didn't have too much trouble using rulers, but we will review tomorrow before the test. Next we went to art and finished the day with science. We watched a movie about sound and then began reviewing for the test by working in partners on a worksheet.

The homework for tonight is to read Summer Vacation, math 17-5/study, science page 271/272 and study, and finish the final draft for the pen pal letter (most students already have finished their final draft).

Happy 100th Day from Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning after gym and music, we worked in a 100th day packet of activities. We shared several of the fill-in-the-blank sentences and some were quite funny! (If I had 100 feet, I'd wear 100 shoes.) We learned about the phonics pattern oi, oy. We completed a workbook page practicing words with that pattern. We also introduced our spelling words and completed another workbook page. We completed our DLP, discussed the five parts of a friendly letter, and talked about adjectives. We introduced the centers for this week and completed one rotation. This afternoon, we read Harry Potter (nearly finished!). In math, we learned how to measure in centimeters and meters. Miss Calderone's class has homework, Mrs. Bognetti's class does not. We made a web on the computers to show who gets paid by taxes (community workers). Then, we walked in the 100th Day parade!!! In Social Studies, we reviewed the steps in which a T-shirt is made. Then, we broke apart the steps and wrote them on "T-shirts" to be hung in the hall. The first base tickets for the Ozzie Reading Club were due today. We will still take them tomorrow if your child finishes. Please sign off on the minutes and send it to school!

Friday--Miss Calderone's class

Today was a super fast day! This morning we wrote in our journals and after sharing we read a Valentine's Day story. We then learned about describing words (adjectives). We came up with ideas on what kinds of describing words there are and then put words that we chose on stars. We decorated the stars and put them on the bulletin board! It looks gorgeous! As we finished up our stars we had some time to work on our letters to our pen pals. We then talked about needs and wants in social studies and watched a very informative, but fun, movie about our economy. After lunch we read a couple stories and then had math. We continued learning about measuring. My math class discussed a yard and a foot and how they relate. We made some more estimates and measured some objects around the classroom. We were able to get started on our homework; some finished in class. After math we went to music and then came back and had celebration day. We celebrated by watching The Magic School Bus.

The homework for the weekend is to finish your letter to your pen pal (some finished in class) and complete math 17-3 (some finished in class). Also, complete the 100 day folder to bring to school on Monday, our 100th day of school!

****We will not be having a Valentine's Day party but will still exchange treats for those that bring them. A letter will go home next week, but over the weekend try and find some empty shoe/tissue boxes to bring to school! We'll be using them for our treat boxes!

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we continued our writing from yesterday. The students were supposed to write a paragraph telling what job they would like to have in the future and give reasons WHY they would like to be that. Then, we took a Pre-Test on skills we will learn in Reading. New spelling words are being sent home today for next week's story. Start studying this weekend! The students completed two centers today. In Science, we learned more about sound. I told the students yesterday to try taking a bath and listen to either themselves or someone else talking. The sound waves travel differently through water than air. They giggled at this "homework assignment". Today, they completed a worksheet together in class. This afternoon, we read some of Harry Potter. We are coming up to the very end of The Chamber of Secrets. In math, we practiced measuring using inches, feet and yards. Mrs. Bognetti's class completed the homework in class, Miss Calderone's class has to finish their work this weekend. At the end of the day, the students went to gym class.

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we finished our Theme Test 3, but several students missed parts here and there so we will have to find "extra" time for make-ups over the next couple of days. After, we learned the cursive letters "b" and "h". Remember that the students are NOT supposed to be practicing their names until they have learned all the letters in them! Next, we learned about writing good leads. Our class seems to have a hard time coming up with interesting main idea sentences when we write paragraphs. Hopefully, this activity helped open up their minds to what is or is not a good opening sentence. We completed three centers this morning. In Science, we completed a worksheet together covering vocabulary from our Light unit. We used words like "reflection" and "refraction" to tell about light. We watched a video clip on light and have one page of science homework to complete on their own. This afternoon, we had a student council report and had time to silent read. Then, in math class, we started a unit on Measurement. We learned about measuring with non-standard units (paper clips, linker cubes, etc.). Miss Calderone's math class completed their homework in class. Mrs. Bognetti's class will complete theirs in class tomorrow. Therefore, there is no math homework. In Social Studies, we learned how cotton is taken from the field, cleaned using a cotton gin, and sent to a factory to be made into T-shirts. We also watched a video clip and looked at pictures of different cotton gins. The students have one page of Social Studies homework for tonight. At the end of the day, we went to the library.

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

Our day began writing in our February journals. We wrote about one thing we like to do at home and tried to write 3 supporting details. After sharing we learned the new cursive letter, f. We practiced and then began brainstorming for this week's paragraph; What we would do if we were principal for a day. We started our rough drafts and many students finished. Those that didn't have it as their homework. We then worked on a review packet with a partner. We spent a little time on that before moving on to writing a friendly letter. We reviewed the 5 parts of a letter and then as a class wrote a letter to Mrs. Calit. She'll be so excited to receive our letters! We moved on to social studies next. We received a new Time For Kids magazine about endangered animals. We spent time with a partner looking through it before reading together. For the rest of the morning we reviewed goods, services, and income. We wrote the definition and drew pictures to help us remember what they mean. After lunch we silent read and then had math. We switched classes and started our unit on measurement! We even got new books! Today we focused on estimating and using cubes/paper clips to measure objects in our book. We had a great time in math. We then switched back and went to library. When we came back we had science. We reviewed some information on light and completed a light web in our science journals.

The homework for tonight is to finish your rough draft and continue reading and logging your minutes for Ozzie's Reading Club!

Monday, February 1, 2010

Monday--Miss Calderone's class

Today was a super fast day! We had music and P.E. right away in the morning. When we came back we wrote in our journals for a bit and then took our post-test for the last theme in Just For You. We will take our pretest for Banner Days Theme 1 later this week. We then moved onto math, reviewed double digit subtraction, and then took our chapter 15 test. We will begin measurement later this week. When we returned to our classes it was time to get ready to go! We had a very, very fast day.

The homework for tonight is to sign/return the reading test and continue working on the math facts packet.

***Due to the shortened week we will not have a new spelling list or story. We will be focusing on writing this week and continue with the regular schedule next week. Have a great day off!
