Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

Today we wrote about things we like in our journals. Then, we reviewed words with -id and -ide. We completed a spelling worksheet in class. Then, we reviewed our vocabulary words and re-read The Mixed-Up Chameleon. After that, we read several other books by Eric Carle and compared the illustrations and similarities/differences between them. They can't wait to hear more! We completed our DLP and went to Music and Gym class this morning. After lunch, we read more of Harry Potter. In math, we practiced solving problems with clues like "in all" and "are left" to help decide whether we should add or subtract. We completed a worksheet with a partner. In Social Studies, we talked about groups we belong to and completed an activity in class. In Science, we re-read our lesson about the water cycle and weather. Then, we watched a video clip on the water cycle. I taught the children how to do a lesson outline worksheet. We finished the first 5 in class. They need to finish the worksheet for homework. They were all told to bring their Science books home.

You can start sending in those Box Tops you've been collecting at home! We are having a class competition this month! Also, please continue to send in empty cereal boxes! Thanks!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

In our journals today, we wrote about an animal that we wished we could be. We read a story today about a mixed-up chameleon that wanted to be different. The children had some great ideas and were able to connect those ideas to the story. We cut apart vocabulary cards to practice with at home. We used a Power Point presentation to practice the words and their meanings. Then, we learned how to read quietly to ourselves using "whisper phones". We went to the computer lab for the first time today. We also completed our DLP for today. In the afternoon, we silent read for a few minutes and then I started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to the class. The children really enjoyed it. In math, we reviewed skip-counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. Then, we learned how to add and subtract both vertically and horizontally. Some students need to finish a worksheet for homework tonight. I did collect the ones that were finished. In Science, we learned about weather and the water cycle. We also talked about different drills we would practice in school.

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

As we are starting to establish routines, the children are really starting to catch on! They know to come into the classroom in the morning and start writing in their journals. Today we wrote about something we wish to be. We have a lot of heroes in the making! Then, we learned how to do "DLP" (Daily Language Practice). Basically, we correct two sentences with errors every day. Then, we talked about how to stay on a topic when we write, what paragraphs look like, and how to identify and write good sentences. We practiced our spelling words. Thanks for practicing over the weekend as well! We worked on a spelling page in class today, but not everyone finished. I checked whatever was complete, but did not record the results. We went to art class. This afternoon we practiced skip-counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. It is difficult for beginning 2nd graders to skip-count starting from other numbers besides 2, 5, and 10. I collected a page in class. We had an all-school assembly to discuss Wesley Expectations. At the end of the day, we talked about some Social Studies vocabulary words and cut apart some vocabulary cards for future use. Overall, it was a good day.

Thanks for sending in those empty cereal boxes...keep emptying more!

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We worked hard today! There were a lot of "firsts" this week....today we had our first day of literacy. To start, every week we will be learning a poem in class. We practiced the poem together and analyzed the poem for rhyming words, patterns, etc. Every weekend, the poetry binder will come home and I told the students they are to practice reading their poem(s) to someone at home. This will help reading fluency. Every time they read the poem, they will get better! We also talked about the phonics pattern "id" and "ide". I sent home a list of their first spelling and vocabulary words. These are to be practiced over the weekend and throughout the following week. We went over the words in class as well, but typically they will be learned on Mondays. Then, we got to read with our 4th grade Book Buddies in Mrs. Walters' class. This afternoon, we talked about numbers, skip-counting, and addition/subtraction. The students do have one page of math homework that they need help with...it should be returned on Monday. At the end of the day, we celebrated two birthdays and went to the park for Celebration Day.

If you have any empty cereal boxes, please send them to school as soon as possible. We are in need of more "book boxes"!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we read a book called Wanda's First Day and then we wrote in our journals about happenings on our first day of school. We reviewed vowel sounds and worked in a packet together. Look for the packet in your son or daughter's homework folder. It should be labeled with a "TH", standing for "Take Home". It can be left at home and does not need to be turned in. Tonight, the Parent/Student Handbook for Addison School District 4 is coming home. Please review it with your child and then sign the form that confirms that you read it. The form should be returned to school. We took a timed math test again today. The children were excited to try again and/or answer more problems this time around. We will work our way up through the math facts. This afternoon we played Addition Bingo. It was a lot of fun! We also played Around the World as well. We learned about different classroom jobs and at the end of the day, the children went to Music and Gym class.

Welcome Back to School!

Today we had an exciting day in second grade! It took us some time to get all of our things organized, but we did it! We got to go to Music and Gym class. We learned about our school, our room, some classroom rules and jobs. We labeled our folders and notebooks. We decorated a person that tells about ourselves. We wrote about what we want to learn in second grade. Finally, we got to know each other! A parent letter is going home with your child today. Be sure to read it and look through the many notices from the office, as well. Thanks for sharing your child with me as we learn together in second grade!
