Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We worked really hard to write some penguin paragraphs today! We used facts from our story, books, and the movie we saw yesterday to put our ideas together. We will finish them either tomorrow or Friday. Then, we went to music and gym. After, we took our Reading test. We did not get to our Spelling test today so we will take it tomorrow. In math today we learned how to measure using centimeters and meters. Most students got their work done in class. We will have a test on measurement using inches, feet, yards, centimeters and meters on Friday. In Social Studies, we read about our state government. We also took notes and made a vocabulary card for the word "governor". In Science, we watched a video clip on water pollution and how we can help our environment. Then, we completed some worksheets in class to help review for our test on Friday. The science books will be coming home tonight and tomorrow to help your student study. A slip of paper is coming home with the pages to review. Thanks for all your help!

Thanks to all who sent in shoeboxes today! If you haven't sent one in or have more, please do!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we watched a documentary about penguins called The March of the Penguins. It showed real penguins in Antarctica and how they take care of their eggs on the cold ice. Everyone took notes on the film so we can use the non-fiction facts to write a paragraph tomorrow. We will also take our Reading and Spelling tests. Then, we went to the computer lab and learned typing skills. After lunch, we read more of Harry Potter. In math, we learned about measuring with inches, feet, and yards. Some of us have homework. In Science, we did an explore activity. We put a feather in oil and saw what can happen to birds when oil is spilled into the ocean. We concluded that the birds can die if they are unable to fly and find food. Then, we read our lesson about how we can care for Earth's resources (land, air, and water). We also talked about recycling. We finished our flipbooks today, which should help you and your child study for the science test on Friday. I will send home pages to re-read along with your child's book tomorrow and Thursday. We do have to finish the lesson outline for homework tonight.

I sent home a parent letter asking for you to send in shoe boxes, if possible, by Friday. We appreciate your help!!!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Happy Monday! This morning we reviewed words with -s and -es. We completed DLP and practiced using words with -er and -est endings. We also talked about picture books and how the pictures in these books tell a story. We read Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes and the class loved it! There are more Pete the Cat books that I will share with the class this week. We will read other picture books as well. Then, we did get to one center/guided reading group before art class today. After lunch, we silent read before math class. During math, we learned how to use rulers and measure to the nearest inch. If your child does not have a ruler, it is IMPERATIVE that he/she has one! Please ask your child if he/she needs one. Most students do not have homework, but there are a few who do. In Science, we reviewed ocean habitats. We watched a BrainPop video about oceans and the plants and animals in them. We also took notes on the food web. There will be a Science Test on water habitats on Friday. In Social Studies, we took notes on the local government. We completed a worksheet in class using our books.

Don't forget that we will have our Reading and Spelling Tests on Wednesday this week.

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Well, this week sure flew by quickly! This morning we continued writing paragraphs on how to make a snowman...perfect for our wintery weather today! Then, we talked about facts versus fiction. We also reviewed words with -ing and -ly endings. We highlighted them in this week's poem. Then, we completed our DLP and learned how to send an email. We sent an email to Mr. Langman and got to sign all of our names on it, too. The kids really enjoyed it. We also reviewed words with -er and -est endings and completed a worksheet, too. We made a penguin project to learn six new facts about penguins. We will use them next week to write a paragraph about penguins. Then, we read with our Book Buddies. After lunch, we changed math classes and started Volume 2 of our Math books. Our new topic is on measurement. We will be doing a lot of the work in class because the children need certain tools to complete their work. Some do have homework from today and they might need some paperclips to help complete it! If your child does not have a ruler, please get one over the weekend as we will be measuring inches on Monday! In Science, we read about ocean habitats, took notes, and began working on a page about food webs. I did not send it for homework...we will check it next week! By next Friday, we will have a Science Test on Water Habitats and how to care for natural resources. At the end of the day, we watched a Magic School Bus video about why salmon swim upstream (fresh water habitat). The children really enjoyed it. Have a wonderful weekend!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

It is always odd to have a Monday schedule on a Tuesday, but we did it. I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. This morning we wrote about what it would be like to be a baby duck. Then, we read a story about a duck that almost gets outsmarted by a fox! We introduced words with -ing and -ly endings and clapped some out in syllables. Two spelling words that were very challenging for us: completely and actually. Please practice! Luckily, you will have until next Wednesday to study. We are going to extend this week's story, due to the shortened week, into next week. There is so much to learn about penguins! Then, we completed the DLP, talked about words that compare (-er, and -est), and started writing paragraphs about how to make a snowman. We went to the computer lab as well. This afternoon, we learned how to add and subtract using mental math. I am not requiring that students use mental math on their homework, however. If they are more comfortable showing their regrouping, that is perfectly acceptable. Most students do have homework. In Science, we made a foldable that will help us take notes on fresh and salt water habitats. We re-read our lesson on fresh water habitats and took notes about ponds and streams. Then, we completed two worksheets together. Save them to study from for the test! There is a possibility that we may have one by the end of NEXT week.

We made predictions and then checked to see if our predictions were correct. Ask your child what happened in our experiment! Then, we read our lesson on fresh water habitats. We need to complete the lesson outline for homework.

The children really enjoyed it! We also did an activity using antonyms (opposites). We completed our DLP, too. After literacy, we went to the computer lab and learned about Presidents' Day. The set will be coming home tonight for you to help your child study for the test on Friday! Then, we re-read the lessons with a partner and completed a vocabulary review sheet. Then, we worked on our map skills and used a map key.

Reminder: If you would like to send in Valentines tomorrow, make sure there is one for each child in the class!
