Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we reviewed words with -ew and -ui. We talked about words that have more than one meaning. We also practiced some past-tense verbs and completed our DLP. After we went to the library, we finished two guided reading groups/centers. We are nearing the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We will try hard to finish the book tomorrow. In math, we used shapes to do some problem solving. Then, we took our geometry math test. If your child still does not know his/her 2D and 3D shapes, please practice at home! We completed another timed test in school. Every time we pass a test, the student will receive a bookmark with the facts that he/she needs to pass next. Please study with your child at home because we are trying our best to master these facts by the end of the year! At the end of the day, we went to gym and music.

Don't forget there is a Reading and Spelling test tomorrow! It will be a half-day for students!

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We had such a good day at the Field Museum yesterday! I hope your child told you about all the things we saw there! They did an excellent presentation about Pawnee Native Americans for us and told us stories with their hands like they did in the past. It was very fascinating. Because we weren't here yesterday, we did a lot of work today!

We started by working on our Washington, D.C. projects. The posters are coming along pretty well. We are still trying our best to learn how to work together in a group. After gym and music, we started literacy. We reviewed words with ew and ui sounding like oo. We made words with letters. We also introduced and completed an activity together using our vocabulary words. After lunch, we read some more of Harry Potter. We are nearing the end of the Chamber of Secrets! In math, we used shapes to make patterns. Most students finished their worksheets in class, but we sent a review sheet home because we will have a math test on 2D and 3D shapes tomorrow. After we took a timed test, we went back to literacy. We talked about words that have multiple meanings. Then, we read our story Max Found Two Sticks. We completed our DLP and talked about past tense verbs, too. Overall, it was a good day!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Thanks to all the parents who came for "What's Happening At Wesley Day" today! We hope you got a snapshot of what we really do here at Wesley School each day. We did not do anything fancy or abnormal, just showed you what we do on a daily basis.

We started our day by working on our Washington, D.C. posters. Each group is starting to draw a picture of their monument/building. Most groups did a nice job working together. Then, we learned our new phonics pattern (ew, ui sounding like 00). We completed an activity together. Then, we introduced our spelling words. The children went to art class. After lunch, we silent read. Then, we learned how to make 2D shapes out of pattern blocks. Most of us finished our work in class. Then, we took a timed test. We finished literacy in the afternoon. We had two sentences of DLP to correct, we talked about poetry, and we discussed past-tense verbs. In Social Studies, we talked about the Preamble to our Constitution and symbols of the United States. We read some pages about Presidential treasures in the Smithsonian and completed a worksheet together.

Don't forget that tomorrow is our big field trip!

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We had an extremely busy day! We started our morning by getting our pictures taken. Then, we reviewed words that end in f. We need to change the f to a v before adding es. After, we worked diligently to address our envelopes so we could send letters to Washington, D.C. Hopefully by the time we get back from Spring Break, we will have tons of mail to open! Then, we took our Reading Test. This afternoon, we read a couple of Irish Folktales written by Tomie De Paola. We also worked on a St. Patrick's Day packet of fun activities. In math, we traced 3D shapes to see what 2D shapes are in them. Most of us finished our work in class. Then, because we had such good behavior for weeks on end, Mr. Langman took the class out for a 30 minute recess! What an honor! With red faces from running in the heat, we came back to class and had "Celebration Day". We decorated and put together leprechauns and then wrote why we are lucky to be students at Wesley School. Since our day was so busy, we didn't have time for our Spelling Test. The students were crushed (well, not really), but I told them not to worry about it! Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning was very exciting. We started the day by introducing the second graders to their Washington, D.C. project! We have broken the students into 15 different groups. Each group will draw a poster of their monument/building they have chosen to research, as well as produce a paragraph about their place as well. We will be completing this project in class. However, we did ask students to search online at home for a picture of their place before Friday, if possible. We also wrote letters to each place in Washington, D.C. to request information and pictures to help us learn about each. After gym and music, we practiced using contractions. We also re-read our story Good-bye, Curtis. We did complete a scavenger hunt with a partner, but I noticed that several students did not write plural nouns. Therefore, I am assigning this as homework so that you can check over your child's work and make sure they have the right answers. After lunch we read Harry Potter. In math, we learned about 3D shapes. We talked about how many faces, vertices and edges each shape has. Most students do have math homework.

Don't forget that spelling packets are due tomorrow. Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we started learning about how contractions are made. We combined two words by taking out letters and adding an apostrophe. Then, we completed an activity together and introduced our spelling words for this week. The hardest word was "shouldn't" because of that silent "l"! We completed our DLP and talked about subject/verb agreement. Then, we went to art class. This afternoon, we did some problem solving using logical reasoning. Tomorrow we will have a math test on capacity and measurement. We will then start our unit on Geometry. In Social Studies, we learned about symbols of the United States: Uncle Sam, Liberty Bell, Bald Eagle. We each made one symbol. We do have one S.S. worksheet for homework. The spelling packet came home today as well.

Then, we re-read our play, The Pine Park Mystery. After, we took our test. We also took our Spelling test. We spent some time finishing up our Snowman and Penguin paragraphs. This afternoon we learned more about measurement. Some students do have homework. In Science, we did an explore activity about matter and its properties. Ask your child what was in the containers. We completed a worksheet using our vocabulary words. In Social Studies, we talked about voting procedures. We also talked about how you need to be a U.S. citizen and 18 years old to vote in the United States. We completed a worksheet together. At the end of the day, we played Heads-Up 7-Up for a few minutes for Celebration Day.

We've also had such good behavior that we won 30 minutes of recess with Mr. Langman next week! Our class won the most Shout Outs at specials and lunch/recess in the entire school! WOW! Let's keep up the good work!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we read a poem together. Then, we reviewed words with re- and pre-. We clapped out words in syllables and we decided that the prefixes get their own syllables. We also talked about narrative elements. Every story has characters, a problem and a solution. We read passages and assessed what we thought was the problem and solution. We completed our DLP and an activity on action verbs. We had two centers/guided reading groups today. We also went to the library. This afternoon, we learned about grams and kilograms. Most students finished the math homework in class. At the end of the day, we had gym and music.

There will be a Reading and Spelling test tomorrow!

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We got MORE than enough shoe boxes so everyone got to make their own! The kids had a great time painting this morning, adding glitter, and then putting the background and penguins in this afternoon. I appreciate the overwhelming support!

We also took our Spelling test, Science test, and a Math test today. We read with our book buddies and did a recycling activity. The poetry binder is not coming home this weekend because we didn't have one extra minute to put them in our binders! Take a weekend off!

Next week we will start a Science unit on Matter. We will learn about the Federal Government in Social Studies. In math, we will focus on capacity and weight. We are always having fun and learning!

Your child's Student Learning Profile (report card) came home today. Please share it with your student and think of some goals to work on for the third trimester.

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we wrote about what we would do if we were the mayor of Addison. We had a fire drill. Then, we took our Theme 1 Reading Test. We went to the library and got through two centers/guided reading groups. This afternoon, we did problem solving in math. We will have a math test tomorrow on measurement. A review workbook page was either completed in class or sent home for homework. After, we went to gym and music. The students do have one Science review page to complete for homework. It will help them write how they can help the earth. Remember to study for the test tomorrow.

We are in need of ten more shoeboxes. The best we can do right now is to pair up students and make one diorama between the two students. That would work, but then every student would not get to take one home. Please send any extra shoeboxes, if possible. Thanks!
