Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We started off our morning by practicing reading our Washington, D.C. paragraphs with our groups so that we were ready to present this afternoon.  Then, we wrote in our journals about our likes/dislikes of apple pie.  I couldn't believe how many students had never had apple pie before!  Then, we introduced our phonics pattern for this week (oo and ou).  We also learned our spelling words and wrote on notebook paper.  After we finished our DLP, writing and grammar, we also learned cursive capital letters C and E.  We are working hard to write our names correctly!  We went to art as well.  After lunch, we learned more about subtracting three digit numbers in math.  Some students do have homework.  Then, we presented our Washington, D.C. projects.  The groups did wonderfully!  We are so glad to be done so you can see them at Celebration of Learning Night this Thursday at 6pm.  At the end of the day, we read about Native Americans (and tied in what we learned on our field trip).  We talked about three different groups of Native Americans and what they eat, wore, lived in and how they traveled.  There is an optional Native American Diorama project that will be counted as extra credit for those who choose to do it.  Directions are coming home today!  The project will be due next Monday.  Thanks for all your extra support at home!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we wrote make-believe stories.  I was pleased to see that the students had a beginning, middle and an end to their stories.  Some added terrific adjectives to give the readers great pictures in their minds.  Our writing has come a long way!  Then, we reviewed words with -air and -are.  We practiced the reading strategy inferencing and most seem to really be catching on!  We corrected our DLP and worked on a grammar worksheet.  After library, we had centers/guided reading.  We used our inferencing strategy from earlier in the day to understand more about what the author wrote.  This afternoon, we learned how to subtract hundreds.  Some students have math homework.  After gym and music we took another timed test.  I hope to see everyone at the Sock Hop tonight!  It should be a lot of fun!

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we wrote about what it would be like if we could fly.  We wrote some great fantasies!  We got together in groups to re-read Abuela and write down events that could really happen in real life and events that could not happen in real life.  They did a great job.  We discussed our answers together.  Most students have a scavenger hunt to complete for homework.  We also did an inferecing activity online.  After music and gym class, we completed a grammar activity, corrected DLP and collected centers.  This afternoon, we read a few chapters of Holes.  Then, we used our inferencing strategy from this morning to help us solve problems in math.  Some students do have math homework.  We also took a test on adding three digit numbers and problem solving.  We took our Social Studies test.  In Science, we read about Light.  We completed the lesson outline, though some need to finish for homework.  It was a great day.

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We learned a lot today!  We started by writing about what we like to do when we spend time with our grandparents.  A lot of students told us that they like being spoiled by them!  At least they are honest!    Our story today was about a girl who spends time with her "Abuela", or grandmother, in a fantasy world.  The children had a great time reading and discussing it.  We did a Making Words activity to practice our spelling words.  We introduced our vocabulary words.  We made a chart telling what happened at the beginning, middle and end of our story.  Our DLP was completed along with our grammar activity.  Then, we went to the computer lab and did a recycling activity.  This afternoon we learned how to regroup in the tens column.  Some students do have math homework.  In Science, we took a field trip down to the teacher's lounge to learn about what happens to matter when you add heat.  Ask your child what he/she predicted would happen to ice, butter and chocolate when you add heat.  At the end of the day, I gave each child a Hershey's kiss to remind them that solids can melt when heat is added.  I hope they remember!  We had a couple of minutes to review for our Social Studies test at the end of the day.  Make sure your child knows who leads the local government, state government and federal government.  Also, they need to know the three parts of the federal government, along with the vocabulary words and how to read a map grid.  Happy Studying!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we learned about words with the -air and -are phonics patterns. We introduced our spelling words today on NOTEBOOK PAPER! This was exciting because knowing how to head a paper is a third grade skill! We are getting ready! Then, we completed our DLP, talked about writing personal narratives and what we can add to our journal writing, and looked at more subject/verb agreement. After art, we completed some of our Theme test. This afternoon, we read more of Holes. In math, we learned how to add three digit numbers with regrouping in the ones column. We had to first remember how to add two digit numbers! The children are seeing loud and clear that the skills we learn build upon each other! Some students do have math homework. We also took another timed test. In Social Studies, we covered how to read a map grid. We completed an activity together and one on our own as well. Then, we learned about flags from around the world, colored an American flag and reviewed for our test on Wednesday. It was a great day!

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Talk about a busy day! We started our morning by FINISHING our Washington, D.C. projects. They look great! Students that were finished worked on review booklets and decorations for our display. Then, we reviewed words with the suffixes -ful and -less. We completed our DLP and a grammar activity on subject/verb agreement. We read with our book buddies and took our Reading test. After lunch, we watched a video clip on Earth Day. We talked about ways we can help our Earth. We also squeezed in an Earth Day project and acrostic poem, too. In math, we added hundreds. Some students do have math homework. In Science, we read about energy. We talked about how things can change when you add or take away heat. Solids can become liquids, liquids can become gases, etc. We have one page of science homework to finish over the weekend. At the end of the day, we made Chinese Lanterns for you to see on Celebration of Learning Night. We drew Chinese symbols on them, too. The sad news is that we didn't have any time left in our busy day for our Spelling test. The students were so bummed...well, not really. Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Earth Day!

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We actually have Washington, D.C. posters hung in the hallway! We are nearing the end! Several groups are finished typing their final paragraphs now and are reviewing for the Social Studies test that we will take next week. I will send home review pages by the end of the week. We still have some map skills to cover first! After we worked on our projects, we went to gym and music. In Literacy, we practiced writing sentences with comparing words. We reviewed our vocabulary words and re-read Chinatown in groups. We completed our DLP and our grammar (subject/verb agreement), too. After lunch, we read Holes. Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

What a day! We started this morning off by writing some words with -er and -est in our Quick Words. We use these when we write in our journals. Then, we did a Making Words activity to help us practice our spelling words. We made a web telling everything we know about Chinatown. We introduced our vocabulary words for this week. Our skill this week is to focus on details so we talked about how they tell more about the main idea. After, we read our story for this week Chinatown. We went to the computer lab and after we returned, we completed our DLP and grammar activity covering subject/verb agreement. This afternoon, we read more of Holes. In math, we learned about hundreds, tens, and ones and how to write them in expanded form. Most students finished their work in class. Next, we took a timed math fact test and our Science test. At the end of the day, we learned the capital cursive letters A and O. It was a great day!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We had such an exciting day! To start my blog, I'd like to tell you about the END of the day first because we finished all the lowercase cursive letters! It was such a celebration to get through all 26 letters! Everyone in the class should be able to write their first and last names in cursive, minus the capital letters of course! We will be starting those tomorrow...

This morning we started by working on Washington, D.C. So many groups are typing and finishing up their final products. They are looking fabulous! Then, we talked about words with
-er and -est endings. We completed our DLP and then went to art class. This afternoon, we read more of Holes. Then, we learned about hundreds, tens and ones in math class. Most students do have homework. We took another timed math fact test. We introduced our spelling words and then worked on subject/verb agreement with different forms of has. Overall, it was a good day.

Don't forget about the Science test tomorrow on Matter! We will start learning about Heat, Sound and Light next.

It's Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class!

Right away this morning we got together with our Washington, D.C. groups. Students were able to use mail from Washington to write their reports. They are really coming together! Some groups have even finished typing their paragraphs and they look great. We can't wait for you to see them on Celebration of Learning Night! After that, we worked on a grammar activity and completed our DLP for this week. We took our Spelling and Reading tests and had book buddies, too. We learned the cursive letters "n" and "m" today. After lunch, we read some more chapters of Holes. In math class, we learned about hundreds in our new Place Value unit. Most students finished their work in class. We took another timed test and we are really moving forward! Keep practicing! We reviewed for our Science test that will take place on Tuesday. I sent the page numbers home to review (E3-E27) as well as the textbooks. Most likely, we will not have time on Monday to review again in class. At the end of the day, we went to the park for Celebration Day. It was a great week!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we reviewed words with -gh and -ph. Then, we talked about summarizing what we read. We practiced the skill during guided reading and it was difficult for some. Make sure to ask your child about what they read at home and have him/her summarize it for you. We completed our DLP, practiced subject/verb agreement, and reviewed our vocabulary words for tomorrow's reading test. After library, we completed two centers/guided reading groups. This afternoon, we took two math tests. We also took a timed test and learned the cursive letter "n". We had an assembly about bullying. At the end of the day, we went to gym and music.

There will be a Science test next Tuesday. I will send home pages to review and Science books over the weekend.

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we worked for another hour on our Washington, D.C. projects. They are really coming along! After gym and music, we practiced writing sentences using our words with gh and ph. We reviewed our vocabulary words and re-read our story Anthony Reynoso: Born to Rope. Tonight, the students have a scavenger hunt to complete using the story. Please make sure your child is writing down PROPER NOUNS in the second column. We talked about how those are IMPORTANT nouns like specific places and people's names. We completed our DLP and worked on subject/verb agreement for grammar. This afternoon, we started reading the book Holes. They really seemed to enjoy it! In math, we learned about area. We will have a math test tomorrow on slides, flips, turns, congruency, symmetry, area and perimeter. A review workbook page came home for homework. In Science, we learned about physical and chemical changes. We completed one page together, but the students need to complete one page for homework.

Today we had ELEVEN students pass their timed tests. I was ecstatic! Keep practicing those math facts with your child so we can get all the facts mastered before third grade! I really appreciate all your extra support at home!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We actually have a five day week!!! I have to admit that the students were pretty tired after the three day weekend. We need to gear up for these five days of hard work!

This morning we worked on our Washington, D.C. projects. Some groups have finished their posters and have moved on to writing their paragraphs. We are getting closer and closer to the end! Then, we read a story called Jalapeno Bagels. We learned our phonics pattern of the week: gh and ph words that sound like (f). We introduced the spelling words. Yes, one of the words is "petroglyphs", a word from our story this week that means "pictures carved in rock". We completed a workbook page using our spelling words. Then, we corrected two sentences of DLP, talked about writing personal stories, and discussed helping verbs. We also went to art class. This afternoon we learned how to find a perimeter in math. Some students do have homework. We also took another timed test. I continue to move more and more students to subtraction....finally! Keep practicing at home!!! At the end of the day, we learned two more cursive letters, g and o. Remember not to practice letters we haven't covered in class. Some of the students are learning bad habits before they have even been introduced to the letters!

Blog for the week of April 3rd

We had an interesting week! We have worked really hard in our Washington, D.C. groups and have really enjoyed opening mail from various places in Washington, D.C. Our time and effort in mailing those letters have really paid off! Each group is attempting to finish their posters and some are even starting to write paragraphs! Thanks for your help researching over break.

In math, we have learned about congruent shapes, symmetry, and slides, flips and turns. We will continue with shapes next week as we learn about area and perimeter.

We had a visit from a firefighter this week. He taught us how to call 911 in the event of an emergency. We discovered, however, that some students still do not know their phone number or address! Please make sure your student knows this information in case of an emergency!

The other exciting news is that we finished Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets this week. We have enjoyed discussing our favorite parts of the book and writing about it in our journal as well.

Have a wonderful three day weekend!
