Friday--Miss Calderone's class

Our day started correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our March journal. After sharing we completed the last 3 centers for the week. We then took our spelling test. In preparation for our reading test we played pictionary/charades to study the vocabulary. After taking the reading test we learned a new cursive letter; d. Our morning ended with social studies. We reviewed what we read the other day and completed a sheet together after finishing reading lesson one. After lunch our mystery reader came and read us an awesome book! We had a great time! We switched quickly for math and learned about congruence. We made a chart on the board of congruent and not congruent shapes and then worked together in the math workbook. After math we had music. When we came back we reviewed bones in science and then moved desks! Our day ended with celebration day.

The homework for the weekend is math 20-1, complete "Grains" sheet, sign/return report card envelope, sign math test, and bring a stamped envelope to school (see Washington D.C. note). Have a great weekend!

Thursday in Mrs.Bognetti's Room

This morning we created Penguin Profiles. The students had to draw a picture of a penguin, name it, and tell about it. Then, we finished watching The March of the Penguins. The children were in awe when the chicks finally hatched! After, we talked about suffixes -ly and -ing. We completed a worksheet in class. The students do have a spelling worksheet for homework. We discussed facts vs. fiction. We completed our DLP and reviewed words that compare. The students have one page of English homework. We completed three centers. Then, we had book buddies. This afternoon, we reviewed for and took our Math Test on 2 and 3-D shapes. We will continue with geometry for another unit tomorrow. In Science, we finished a mini-book about teeth and read a poem about loose teeth. There was no homework given. At the end of the day, the children went to music class.

Thursday--Miss Calderone's class

What a fast day! We began the day finishing March of the Penguins. The students really liked the movie. When we came back we corrected our D.L.P. and silent read. After that we completed 3 centers. We then used the facts that we wrote down from the movie to write informational paragraphs about penguins. We connected them to our penguin finger paints (which we did in art center this week) and hung them out in the hall. They look great! That took up the rest of our morning. We wrote rough drafts, edited ourselves, and wrote final drafts all in 40 minutes! It is so awesome to see how far we've come especially in our writing. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then switched for math. We reviewed chapter 19 and had our test. After math we had science. We started by reviewing lungs and then watched a movie about bones! After discussing we took a quiz about the movie. Our day ended with P.E.

The homework for tonight is grammar pg. 138, read/study The Emperor's Egg, spelling packet/study, and sign the note about the Harry Potter movie!

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we watched part of the movie The March of the Penguins. It is a documentary about penguins in Antarctica. The children always enjoy seeing and hearing about the factual information regarding these fascinating creatures and the adaptations they must have in order to survive in such brutal conditions. After that, we reviewed the spelling pattern. We completed our work in class. Then, we practiced our vocabulary words and re-read The Emperor's Egg in groups. Then, we completed our DLP and grammar worksheet in class, as well. We got through three centers today. In Science, we learned about the parts of a tooth and the jobs of each type of tooth. This afternoon, we looked at pictures of 2-D and 3-D shapes and compared/contrasted them. In my math class, we also worked in a Shapes and Geometry mini-book. All students have one page of math homework. In Social Studies, we learned about our local government. Each town has a mayor and city council that runs the government. We watched a short video clip showing different things that needed to get done in each town (garbage pick-up, mail delivery), as well as community workers that help the town (police, fire, libraries, schools, etc.). The students have one page of Social Studies homework. At the end of the day, we went to the library.

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

We had a new beginning to the day today! We came in and began our D.L.P. and journal, but shortly after correcting our D.L.P. we went into Mrs. Bognetti's room to watch half of March of the Penguins. We took our journals in to write down facts as we watched. After the movie we came back and reviewed words that compare. We completed a sheet independently and then went over it together. We then completed 3 centers. Our day ended with social studies. We looked over the vocabulary words for the story and read about the first three: government, mayor, and citizen. We drew pictures to accompany the vocabulary and even looked at Addison's government web page. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit before math. In math we reviewed what we learned with an emphasis on 2-D vs. 3-D shapes. At the end of math we had some time to make some figures using bags of shapes. After math we went to library and then came back to have science. We reviewed the "hard quiz" from yesterday and then learned about the lungs today. We drew in the lungs on our body outline and discussed the job of that organ. We took a short quiz on the movie and then had a bit of time to go over the quiz.

The homework for tonight is to read The Emperor's Egg and complete math 19-6. Our chapter 19 math test is tomorrow so it would be a good idea to go over the shapes that we learned. We will be reviewing a bit before the test.

Tuesday--Miss Calderone's class

Today we started out by correcting our D.L.P. and using the word wall words in a paragraph. After sharing our paragraphs we learned about words that compare. We learned that when you compare two objects the word ends in -er and when you compare 3 or more the word ends in -est. We identified words that compare and then completed a worksheet independently. After correcting it together we discussed the South Pole. We made a web of animals that live in the South Pole (and discovered polar bears do not live there) and then saw some pictures of different animals on the Internet. We then learned the vocabulary for the new story and finally read/discussed The Emperor's Egg. We had such an awesome discussion about the story. The students were very interested in it. After that we learned about the new art center and finally completed 3 centers. After lunch we switched right away for math. We reviewed 2-D and 3-D shapes and then made patterns using different shapes. We identified the unit (the shapes that repeat in a pattern) and then finished some workbook pages together. We then switched back to go to art. After art we finished the day with science. We reviewed why exercising is important and then learned about our 5 senses and nervous system. We watched a short movie and learned about how parts of our body send messages to the brain so that we can make sense of our world. We received blank body outlines and drew in a brain and the wrote the purpose of the organ. We had a short quiz after that.

The homework for tonight is to read The Emperor's Egg and complete math 19-5. Please review hexagon, trapezoid, and pentagon. Those seem to be the ones we have the most trouble with.

Monday--Miss Calderone's class

What a fast day! Today we began our day right away with music and P.E. When we came back we corrected our D.L.P. and wrote in our new March journals. After sharing we learned the two new suffixes for this week; -ly and -ing. We added the suffixes to base words to make new words and then took our spelling pretest. After correcting we learned about the new centers for this week. We got new guided reading books and then finished one center. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then had math. We reviewed the shapes we learned and then learned two new shapes; trapezoid and hexagon. We were given a bag full of different shapes and put some together to make new shapes. We completed some pages in our math book together. After math we had science. We started learning our new unit; the human body. Today we learned about exercise. We watched a short movie and discussed it together, and then took a quiz. We had some time to go over the answers together. Our day ended with Media Center.

The homework for tonight will be to sign the reading test, complete math 19-4, and read The Emperor's Egg.
