Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we wrote about how fun it is to build snowmen. Then, we met Mrs. Barrett, our student teacher, that will be joining us in January. She stayed with us while we did an activity with adjectives. First, we described several Disney characters using as many adjectives as we could. Then, we decided to use more describing words when we wrote letters to Santa explaining what we would like for Christmas. The children had to choose one thing and tell what color it was, how big/little it was, what it looked like, where they would store it, etc. They had to use all 5 parts of a letter (correctly), use their best spelling and punctuation, and make a final copy using their best handwriting. The project took up most of the morning. We were able to squeeze in some Science, however, as we studied the human skeleton. We put together some bones and talked about their function. This afternoon, we read Harry Potter. Then, in math, we made some graphs using information about different kinds of bears. We also reviewed math facts, time and money. In Social Studies, we finished a worksheet and read about maps. Then, the students completed a worksheet on their own using a map key and a compass rose. At the end of the day, the students went to gym class.

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we divided words into syllables. The children completed their spelling worksheets in class, too. We talked about how to read diagrams, reviewed our word wall words and completed two centers/guided reading groups. We also made a brochure using information from the story From Seed to Plant. The students can use it to study for the reading test tomorrow. The students do have some grammar homework for tonight. We read with our 4th grade Book Buddies. This afternoon, we reviewed different types of graphs and took a math quiz, too. We also took a timed test on math facts. Please review, review, review math facts with your child, as we will start adding double digit numbers after winter break. At the end of the day, we watched a video clip on how a seed becomes and plant, how seeds travel, and about pollenation. Don't forget to re-read the story with your child tonight and study spelling words as well.

This month we are having a Box Tops classroom competition. If you've got some stored up at home, now is the time to send them in! Thanks!

Tomorrow is Slipper Day---please send a pair of slippers for your child to wear tomorrow at school.

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we talked about pumpkins and how they grow. During the week, we will read a story called From Seed to Plant. It is a non-fiction story about plant growth. Then, we practiced using words with str-, spr, and thr-. We introduced the spelling words (list coming home today!) and completed an activity using the words, too. We finished our two sentences of DLP for today and talked about capitalizing names of months. We completed two guided reading groups/centers. Then, in Science, we learned about the heart. We watched a brainpop video about the heart, drew one, and added it to our "bodies" that we are working on. After lunch, we read Harry Potter. Then, we went down to the gym for a dress rehearsal for Wednesday's show. The students sang enthusiastically! We can't wait for you to see them! They should be here at 6:45 on Wednesday night. We completed our Daily Oral Geography packet today and read about community workers that are paid for by taxes. Then, we went to gym class. There is no homework tonight...perhaps you will have time for an extra book tonight!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we wrote some ways Johnny Appleseed helped the Earth. Then, we wrote down one way we could help the Earth. Then, we watched a movie about Johnny Appleseed with Mrs. Walter's class. We visited the Book Fair. If your child did not bring money today and would like to purchase a book, he/she may bring money tomorrow or Monday. We reviewed words with -eer and -ear. The students have one page of spelling homework. We talked about main ideas and details. We completed our DLP and a workbook page on capitalizing days of the week. We completed four guided reading groups today and read with our Book Buddies. This afternoon, we learned about pictographs in math class. Both classes have math homework, though I did collect a couple that finished in my class. In Science, we watched a movie about our dental health and finished our dental packets. We will begin studying body parts next. Don't forget we have a Reading and Spelling test tomorrow.

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

Today we talked a lot about Johnny Appleseed! This morning we wrote about pioneers in our journals. Then, we reviewed words, like pioneer, that have -eer and -ear. The students finished their spelling activities in class. We re-read our play. The characters read with much more confidence than yesterday. We also completed our DLP. In guided reading, we read some books about Johnny Appleseed or plays in general. We went to music class. In Social Studies, we made some vocabulary cards for the words income, goods, and services. We also watched a movie clip on our economy and jobs that are paid for by taxes. In math today, we learned how to take a survey using tally marks and transfer that information to a bar graph. Both classes have math homework. In Science, we learned about dental health. Some students do not know what dental floss is! Please show your child how to floss at home! Then, we worked in a dental packet.
