Thursday--Miss Calderone's class

We had a super busy day today! We began right away with our D.L.P. After correcting that we had our spelling test. We then had one center. After that we took our reading test. We then completed the last two centers and finished the morning with our social studies test. I thought it would be better to have them all in the morning rather than at the end of the day. After lunch some 4th graders came and read to us! They did a great job! We switched for math and reviewed for the test. We finished math taking the test and the students did a great job! After math we went to music and finished the day watching a science movie about animals. We really liked it.

A math facts packet was sent home today. Although it is not due until April 15th, it's important to still practice over break. I also sent the reading book home and encouraged the students to read the next story. Please continue to read and practice math facts over break. We will jump right back into things when we come back! Have a wonderful and relaxing break!

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

Today we began our day correcting our D.L.P. and writing in our March journal about the 3 parts of government. I've really been trying hard to review as much as possible for our social studies test! After discussing our journals we began centers. We completed 2 centers and then took a snack break. While eating we reviewed contractions and independently completed a sheet which we corrected together. We then finished the last center. After that we completed a Venn-Diagram for Curtis when he began mail carrying and then 42 years later. The students came up with great ideas! After that we learned a new cursive letter; x. We're almost done with the lowercase letters! Our morning ended with social studies. We finished reading the unit and learned how to read a grid map. We put up a picture of a baseball field and then a collage of Washington D.C. memorials and identified which parts were in which parts of the grid. The students caught on quickly and did an awesome job. After lunch we stopped, dropped, and read for a bit. We then had a practice fire drill. When we came back we had math. We reviewed triple digit addition together and then used white boards to practice solving problems. Again, the students did an excellent job. A mystery reader came in and guess who it was...Mr. Wartman! The students had a BLAST listening to him read a really funny book! We were all very excited to see him! When he left we finished up math and then went to library. After library we finished the day having a yummy birthday treat and discussing the last parts we'll be putting on our bodies (bones, muscle, and digestive system). We will probably finish our bodies when we come back from break.

The homework for tonight is to complete your spelling packet/study, read Good-Bye Curtis/study, Study for the social studies test, and complete math 23-3/study. I know there are lots of tests tomorrow and I will do my best to spread them out and not overwhelm anybody.

All students have one page of math homework. In Social Studies, we learned about our local government. Each town has a mayor and city council that runs the government. We watched a short video clip showing different things that needed to get done in each town (garbage pick-up, mail delivery), as well as community workers that help the town (police, fire, libraries, schools, etc.). The students have one page of Social Studies homework. At the end of the day, we went to the library.

Wednesday--Miss Calderone's class

We had a new beginning to the day today! We came in and began our D.L.P. and journal, but shortly after correcting our D.L.P. we went into Mrs. Bognetti's room to watch half of March of the Penguins. We took our journals in to write down facts as we watched. After the movie we came back and reviewed words that compare. We completed a sheet independently and then went over it together. We then completed 3 centers. Our day ended with social studies. We looked over the vocabulary words for the story and read about the first three: government, mayor, and citizen. We drew pictures to accompany the vocabulary and even looked at Addison's government web page. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit before math. In math we reviewed what we learned with an emphasis on 2-D vs. 3-D shapes. At the end of math we had some time to make some figures using bags of shapes. After math we went to library and then came back to have science. We reviewed the "hard quiz" from yesterday and then learned about the lungs today. We drew in the lungs on our body outline and discussed the job of that organ. We took a short quiz on the movie and then had a bit of time to go over the quiz.

The homework for tonight is to read The Emperor's Egg and complete math 19-6. Our chapter 19 math test is tomorrow so it would be a good idea to go over the shapes that we learned. We will be reviewing a bit before the test.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Tuesday--Miss Calderone's class

Today we started out by correcting our D.L.P. and using the word wall words in a paragraph. After sharing our paragraphs we learned about words that compare. We learned that when you compare two objects the word ends in -er and when you compare 3 or more the word ends in -est. We identified words that compare and then completed a worksheet independently. After correcting it together we discussed the South Pole. We made a web of animals that live in the South Pole (and discovered polar bears do not live there) and then saw some pictures of different animals on the Internet. We then learned the vocabulary for the new story and finally read/discussed The Emperor's Egg. We had such an awesome discussion about the story. The students were very interested in it. After that we learned about the new art center and finally completed 3 centers. After lunch we switched right away for math. We reviewed 2-D and 3-D shapes and then made patterns using different shapes. We identified the unit (the shapes that repeat in a pattern) and then finished some workbook pages together. We then switched back to go to art. After art we finished the day with science. We reviewed why exercising is important and then learned about our 5 senses and nervous system. We watched a short movie and learned about how parts of our body send messages to the brain so that we can make sense of our world. We received blank body outlines and drew in a brain and the wrote the purpose of the organ. We had a short quiz after that.

The homework for tonight is to read The Emperor's Egg and complete math 19-5. Please review hexagon, trapezoid, and pentagon. Those seem to be the ones we have the most trouble with.

What a fast day! Today we began our day right away with music and P.E. When we came back we corrected our D.L.P. and wrote in our new March journals. After sharing we learned the two new suffixes for this week; -ly and -ing. We added the suffixes to base words to make new words and then took our spelling pretest. After correcting we learned about the new centers for this week. We got new guided reading books and then finished one center. After lunch we read Harry Potter for a bit and then had math. We reviewed the shapes we learned and then learned two new shapes; trapezoid and hexagon. We were given a bag full of different shapes and put some together to make new shapes. We completed some pages in our math book together. After math we had science. We started learning our new unit; the human body. Today we learned about exercise. We watched a short movie and discussed it together, and then took a quiz. We had some time to go over the answers together. Our day ended with Media Center.

The homework for tonight will be to sign the reading test, complete math 19-4, and read The Emperor's Egg.
