Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

It was another fun-filled day as we travel around the world! This morning, our class visited the European country of France with Mrs. Barrett. They had an excellent time learning about the holiday traditions and learning some French words as well! Then, we went to the computer lab where we read a story and made a picture about it on the computer. After lunch, we traveled to India with Mrs. Walter. It was quite different from the other traditions we learned so far. Then, we had an extra special treat....a REAL palentologist came to our school to teach our second graders about prehistoric creatures! We got to see and touch many cool fossils. It was truly fascinating! Tomorrow we will travel to some more countries where we will learn about different holiday traditions.

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

If your child told you they traveled to Mexico today, he/she wasn't lying! This morning we made passports so we could travel the world learning about different holiday traditions. Mexico, taught by Mrs. Barrett, was a great place to visit for Los Posados! The children enjoyed finding a raisin in a cake and learned about pinatas as well. This morning we also talked about our own traditions in the United States. Tomorrow, the students will travel to two more countries! They will take their "passport" and "suitcase" with them. Ask your child what else they learned today!

Since we started switching classes in math, I also started a weekly assignment sheet to help the students keep track of what homework they are personally accountable for. This sheet should stay in the homework folder and be brought back to school each day. It will also tell you what color their card was on for each day! I hope this helps!

We practiced the poem together and analyzed the poem for rhyming words, patterns, etc. Every weekend, the poetry binder will come home and I told the students they are to practice reading their poem(s) to someone at home. This will help reading fluency. Every time they read the poem, they will get better! We also talked about the phonics pattern "id" and "ide". I sent home a list of their first spelling and vocabulary words. These are to be practiced over the weekend and throughout the following week. We went over the words in class as well, but typically they will be learned on Mondays. Then, we got to read with our 4th grade Book Buddies in Mrs. Walters' class. For homework, students must write a sentence describing a cowboy or a cowboy hat. They must write their sentence on the hat and color it. Our specials today were gym and computer lab. After our specials, we read our story for this week. The story this called, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." It was a very imaginative story that the kids enjoyed. After lunch, we did our centers. In Math, we talked about milliliters and liters. Students in Mrs. Bognetti's math class do not have homework. Students in Mrs. Walter's math class also do not have homework. For the end of the day, we did Social Studies. We reviewed for our Social Studies test that they have tomorrow. There is a study guide to help them study, but it is not homework.

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We started today by writing in our journals. The topic today was, "In the summer, I like to..." Then we learned about words that make the "oi," sound with the vowels -oi and -oy. In Spelling, we introduced our new words. We also talked about adjectives and learned to describe words based on color, shape, and size. Then, we did our Centers. In Science, we re-read the lesson on Light and talked about shadows. We then traced our silhouettes, they turned out really neat! After lunch, Mrs. Barrett read Harry Potter to the class. In math, we learned about ounce and pound. Students in Mrs. Bognetti's do not have homework, and some students in Mrs. Walter's math class have homework. After math, we celebrated Valentine's Day! The students worked on their Valentine's packets while taking turns to pass out their Valentine's. Then, the students were able to open their Valentine's cards. We ended the day with gym class.

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We began today by writing in our journals. The topic today was, "What makes a good pet?" We then reviewed our vocabulary words and did our centers. Our specials today were art and music. Then, we took our Spelling test. After lunch, we took our Reading test. In math we talked about ways to measure capacity. We discussed fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Both, Mrs. Walter's and Mrs. Bognetti's classes have math homework. In Science, we started talking about light. We did the explore activity and used flashlights to reflect light off of mirrors. We had a great time making the light move across the ceiling and floor with our partners. For Celebration Day, we made our Valentine's Pockets for our celebration on Monday. There was a note sent home today with the student's names listed on it. If your student is planning to distribute Valentine's Day cards, they must give one to each student. We will have a small celebration for Valentine's Day at the end of the day on Monday.

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We started today by writing in our journals. The topic for today was, "If a snake went on a field trip, it would..." This topic went along with our story for this week, "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash," and students had interesting solutions to having a snake on their field trips! In phonics we reviewed the "ow," sound and also talked about adding the suffixes -ful and -less to root words to add to the meaning of the word. We also talked about cause and effect and reviewed pronouns. We completed two centers/guided reading groups. We also read with our 4th grade book buddies. After lunch, Mrs. Barrett read Harry Potter to the class. In math, we learned about capacity. There is no math homework for either class. This afternoon, we went to the library and ended the day reading a Time For Kids magazine for enjoyment.

Today we began the day by writing in our journals. The topic today was, "If I spent a day on a farm, I would..." After that, we reviewed words with the vowels -ou and -ow that make the "ow," sound. We also reviewed pronouns and practiced identifying them in sentences. After lunch, Mrs. Barrett read Harry Potter to the class. In Social Studies, we read about the Land of Freedom and did vocabulary cards for the words: freedom, motto, and monument. In math, we practice comparing and contrasting. Students in Mrs. Bognetti's math class have homework. Students in Mrs. Walter's math class also have homework. Today we also had an assembly. Students from the high school came to Wesley to perform Willy Wonka. After the play, we practiced cursive and learned the letter, "s."
