Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We are using every minute we have left to work, work, work! This morning we reviewed words with -ew and -ui. Then, we completed an activity on contractions. We went to a play of fractured fairy tales. Then, we had music class. We took our spelling and reading tests. In math, we learned the concept of division and how to repeatedly subtract to find the answer to a division problem. The children were so excited to see the link between division and multiplication! They do have one page of homework over the weekend. Then, we got ready for the summer reading program (note sent home today). We stuffed 8 envelopes full of books for each child to read over the summer. They get to keep the books at no cost to you! They were ecstatic! At the end of the day, we got our dioramas out of the cases in the lobby and they were returned home. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Thursday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We squeezed in a lot of literacy this morning!!! The children worked hard! First, we reviewed words with -au and -augh. They have two pages of spelling homework to complete tonight. Then, we talked about homophones. We made an awesome list as a class and completed a workbook page, too. After, we re-read our story in groups and completed a scavenger hunt. Then, we practiced using different forms of has, have, and had. We completed two centers/guided reading. We read books about the rain forest. After seeing a rain forest yesterday, the books seemed so much more real. We read with our 4th grade book buddies. Then, after lunch, we learned about coordinate graphs. Some students do have homework. We saw an incredible assembly outside today. An award-winning biker came and showed us some of his awesome tricks, but also told of how he accomplished it. He had to overcome the pressure from bullies, say no to drugs, and persevere after healing from injuries. What a role-model for us all! At the end of the day, we went to the library and learned two more cursive letters.

See you tonight at the Sock Hop!

We LOVED our Field Trip!

The children were so excited to explore their habitats today! We researched at least five animals in each habitat, wrote down a fact about them, and then reported back to the class. It was such a great learning experience and now every second grader will go to third able to say they've been to the zoo!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

We had another busy day in second grade! This morning we pretended that we were pioneers. We thought about what we would take West with us and drew the items in our covered wagons. They turned out really cute and we can't wait to show you on Celebration of Learning Night on Thursday from 6-8! The children have been working so hard! Then, we reviewed words with -oo and -ou. We learned our new vocabulary words, talked about places we could locate information, and we completed our DLP. We tackled our story for this week; it is an atlas! There is a lot of good non-fiction information in it! We also previewed the books at the Book Fair (you can purchase books during Celebration of Learning or the children are going on Friday during the school day). We also went to Gym and Learning Center. In math, we talked about what is most likely, equally likely or least likely to happen given different circumstances. The children do have math homework. In Social Studies, we re-read our lesson and watched a movie about Lewis and Clark and their expedition.

There will not be a blog tomorrow or Thursday because I am going to Springfield to represent the teachers of Addison School District 4, but I will be back in time to see you at the Celebration of Learning night.

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

Wow! What a wonderful greeting this morning to be presented with so many beautiful flowers! Thank you for the many pictures, flowers, etc...I DO feel appreciated! This morning we talked about words with oo and ou, but sound like the short vowel u. We practiced using these words and introduced our new spelling words as well. The exciting moment this morning was when we learned how to write on notebook paper, as we prepare for third grade! The students were so enthusiastic! We learned how to head it properly and number it as well. Then, we completed our DLP and talked about the present and past tense forms of come and run. We completed two guided reading groups/centers as well. In Science, we learned about habitats. We worked in groups on a couple of worksheets that included pictures of animals from our science books. In math, we started learning about probability. We discussed the words probable, certain and impossible. Both classes finished the work in class. In Social Studies, we learned about Westward Expansion. We talked about Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea, and Thomas Jefferson. We made a vocabulary card and wrote lists of items we would bring with us in a covered wagon if we were pioneers. At the end of the day, the children went to gym class.

Don't forget to mark down Celebration of Learning Night this Thursday at 6pm. Drop by and see all of the work your child has been doing in second grade, including our Washington, D.C. projects! See you there!
