Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we wrote about how fun it is to build snowmen. Then, we met Mrs. Barrett, our student teacher, that will be joining us in January. She stayed with us while we did an activity with adjectives. First, we described several Disney characters using as many adjectives as we could. Then, we decided to use more describing words when we wrote letters to Santa explaining what we would like for Christmas. The children had to choose one thing and tell what color it was, how big/little it was, what it looked like, where they would store it, etc. They had to use all 5 parts of a letter (correctly), use their best spelling and punctuation, and make a final copy using their best handwriting. The project took up most of the morning. We were able to squeeze in some Science, however, as we studied the human skeleton. We put together some bones and talked about their function. This afternoon, we read Harry Potter. Then, in math, we made some graphs using information about different kinds of bears. We also reviewed math facts, time and money. In Social Studies, we finished a worksheet and read about maps. Then, the students completed a worksheet on their own using a map key and a compass rose. At the end of the day, the students went to gym class.

Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Room

This morning we wrote in our journals and then reviewed our phonics pattern. We completed our spelling worksheet in class. We acted out the story of The Enormous Turnip. We worked on two sentences of DLP. Then, we analyzed a couple of pages from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We looked for quotation marks; a clue that dialogue is occuring. We got through two centers today. The students have one page of grammar to finish on nouns for homework. In Social Studies, we started working on landform booklets. We wrote definitions of each type of landform and now we are illustrating them. This afternoon, we learned about ordering numbers in math. We told which number came "before", "after", or "between" numbers. We used number lines and hundreds charts to help. Mrs. Bognetti's math class does not have homework, while Mrs. Walter's class does. In Science, we started researching dinosaurs on zoomdinosaurs.com. The students can use that website on an upcoming dinosaur project...information to be sent home soon! Also, coming home today are the students' pictures and test results from the Theme 1 Literacy test. If you would like to view the test, please email me to make an appointment, or you can view it at conference time. I do not need you to sign the results and send them back...you can keep them!

We also worked on the naming part and telling part of a sentence. This was tricky at first, bu they had it down by the end of the week. In math we finished up Chapter 4 and took our first test. I was soimpressed with how well all of the students did on the test. In science we startecd talking about fossils, and we even got to make our own fossils. On Monday hopefully they will have dried enough so we can pop them out. Some studnets have brought in some fossils they had at home or have dound in their yard. Mrs. Schwarz also brought in fossils she found at a beach in England one day. They were all fun to look at. Thank you everyone. In social studies we learned all about the great state of Illinois. The studnets had many stories for us about their travels throughout the state. We are looking at having our first test in social studies next week on Wednesday. Next week in reading we will be having a unit test. It is very involoved so we will probably take 2 days to do it. We will not be starting our next reading story until next Friday, and we will not have the test for that until Oct. 15th. We started switching rooms for math today. It went really well. The students from Mrs. Bognetti's math class does not have homework. The students from Mrs. Walter's math class has one homework sheet. Then, we looked at samples of writing and chose which purpose we thought the author might have been writing for. We re-read the story Get Up and Go! You should re-read the story with your child tonight. The students do get to use their books on their reading test and should be familiar with the story in order to find the answers in a timely manner. The book will come home with your student tonight. We had a practice fire drill today. After, we completed our DLP and grammar worksheet in class. The students do have a spelling worksheet to complete at home. We completed three centers today and had Book Buddies, as well. This afternoon, we read some more of Harry Potter. In math, we played a game to practice adding, learned how to add on a calculator, and reviewed our addition facts. Then, we started the next chapter on subtraction. Wednesday in Mrs. Walter's Room

Where does our day go?
Today we started our day by finishing up some of our math work from yesterday. Then we got into our journals. We wrote about what we do in the morning to get ready in the morning. We read our story from our reader, Get Up and Go. We did some work with our vocabulary words. We did some graphing about how we get ready for school in the morning. Then we went to gym class. After that Mr. Langman came in to talk to the class about the expectations in the lunchroom. Paperwork came home today regarding this. We got in some phonics right before lunch.
When they came back from recess we worked on our DLP, then we brought out our math books. We worked really hard on story problems. After math we looked at the water cycle for a final time today. We went online and watched a short video about the water cycle as well. Tomorrow we will get to start something new in science. We went to the library where we were able to check out some new books. We have been reading Harry Potter in the classroom, and I saw many students checking out Harry Potter today. The students are able to bring those back next week and check them out again if needed.
When we came back from library we did a little more work on phonics. Then our day ended.
Keep practicing those spelling words for Friday.

After we practiced this for a bit, we worked with a partner on adding 3 single digit numbers in a variety of ways. We did some phonics after this for a bit. We were able to talk a bit about the water cycle again before it was time to go home.
