Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We got a lot done today! This morning we wrote in our journals about where we would like to go on vacation. The character in our story this week makes up a fantasy when telling his class about his summer vacation. Then, we talked about words with oi and oy. We introduced this week's spelling words and completed a workbook page. Then, we worked on three sentences of DLP, talked about parts of a friendly letter and adjectives. We went to the computer lab. Then, we learned the cursive letter "w". This afternoon, we read more of Harry Potter. Then, in math we started learning about double-digit subtraction. We started by subtracting tens. Most students have math homework. In Science, we drew pictures for our desert habitat bulletin board in the hall. For those of you who came to conferences, you might have seen the awesome displays made by all the second graders in the hallway! We also watched a video clip of the desert. At the end of the day, we completed a few more sections of our Reading Theme Test. Spelling packets are coming home today....they are due on Thursday!

We completed our DLP and a worksheet to practice writing pronouns. We did some problem solving in math. On Tuesday, we will begin double-digit subtraction. Continue to practice those math facts at home! In Social Studies, we did a sequencing activity to show how a T-shirt gets from the factory to you. Then, for Celebration Day, we made some snakes to go along with our story this week, The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash. They look very cute! Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy reading the poetry binder with your child!

We worked on a cause and effect activity as well. After library, we completed guided reading/centers. This afternoon, we completed a worksheet to practice writing pronouns. Then, we learned how to add double-digits without using tens and ones blocks. They do have math homework and since there is a math test tomorrow, we sent home the review workbook page as well. Wednesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we reviewed words with ou, ow. Then, we re-read our story, The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash, in groups. We also worked on a scavenger hunt. After music and gym, we worked in centers/guided reading groups. This afternoon, we learned how to add two-digit with two-digit numbers. Most students do have math homework. We took a timed test as well. In Science, we did an explore activity that we will finish tomorrow. We are testing whether a flat leaf or rolled up leaf will dry first. Ask your child which he/she predicts and tell why. Then, we watched a video clip on deserts. In Social Studies, we learned how T-shirts are made and how they get from the factory all the way to us. Since T-shirts are made of cotton, we looked at some actual cotton plants that I have from North Carolina to show the need for the cotton gin. None of us would want to clean that cotton by hand! We did a worksheet together. Then, we learned how to write the cursive letter t at the end of the day. We worked hard!

Tomorrow is pajama day! Students may wear pajamas and bring slippers to change into when they arrive at school.

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we learned about words that end in y. When we want to make them plural, we have to change the y to an i and then add ed. We completed an activity using those words with a partner and we introduced our spelling words, too. We completed our DLP and talked about possessive nouns. We also went to the computer lab and had some time for Think Tac Toe. This afternoon, we took the math portion of the AIMS-WEB test. Then, in math class, we did some problem solving. Everyone has a math test tomorrow, so a review sheet was sent home with the students. Some also have a math worksheet as well. We took a timed test and I'm sad because only one student passed the addition facts today! If your child is stuck on a number, please practice with him/her! In Science, we read about the rain forest. We read about the different layers and took some notes. Then, we made trees and animals to add to our bulletin board in the hallway. The students have one page of science homework. The spelling packet was sent home. It is due on Thursday.

Friday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

We had a very exciting day today! The big news is that we started learning cursive today!!! We learned how to sit with good posture, slant our paper, start our letters from the bottom and write the letter i. The students know that they are only allowed to practice the letter i. We don't want to form any bad habits by practicing letters we do not know. Then, we also reviewed words with -ear. We completed our DLP and finished a grammar worksheet. We took both our Reading and Spelling test. At the end of the day, we had celebration day. Have a wonderful three day weekend. There is a poem about Martin Luther King, Jr. in the poetry binder to practice with your child.

Then, we re-read Watermelon Day and finished a worksheet on proper nouns. We corrected two sentences of DLP. Then, we read a Time for Kids magazine about Martin Luther King, Jr. After we went to the library, we completed two centers/guided reading groups. This afternoon, we learned more about how to add using tens and ones and how to rename numbers. Mrs. Bognetti's math class does not have homework, but the other classes might. At the end of the day, we went to music and gym class. After playing in the snow tonight, please practice spelling words and re-read Watermelon Day. There are tests on both tomorrow!

Today we reviewed a lot! First, we reviewed words with silent letters, like wr, kn, and gn. We wrote some sentences using those words. Then, we re-read our story Watermelon Day. We completed our DLP. We do have one page of grammar homework. The students have to match the holidays to the picture that shows it. After gym and music, we got through two centers. This afternoon, we read some of Harry Potter. In math, we learned how to regroup using bigger numbers. Most students do have homework. We took a timed test. Please keep practicing at home! They must be able to add and subtract quickly when we start to add double-digit numbers or it takes a very long time to get work done! In Social Studies, we re-read our lesson on goods and services. Then, we watched a video clip showing examples. In Science, we re-read our lesson and completed an activity together. They have one page to finish for homework tonight. Remember that the spelling is due tomorrow!

Tuesday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

This morning we reviewed words with kn, gn, and wr by doing a making words activity and a workbook page. Then, we discussed our vocabulary words and put them in sentences on a Power Point. We talked about inferencing and how authors don't always tell us everything. We need to use what we know to make our best guesses while reading. Then, we read the story Watermelon Day. We even learned a watermelon song! After computer lab, we completed our DLP and an activity on abbreviations. After lunch we read some of Harry Potter. In math, we learned how to regroup while adding one digit numbers. Most students have homework. In science, we learned about the woodland forest. We are working on a bulletin board in the hallway combined with the other 2nd grade classes and so far our drawings look great. Ask your child what he/she drew for our woodland forest! We also have a lesson outline to finish for homework. Don't forget the spelling packet is due on Thursday!

Monday in Mrs. Bognetti's Class

Our tired and sleepy brains were woken up this morning! We had lots of learning to do today! First, we started by talking about words with silent letters like wr-, kn- and gn. Then, we used some in sentences and practiced our spelling words, too. There is an error on the list that is being sent home today...instead of practicing "pocketknife", we will be learning "knight". We completed our DLP, talked about reasons, and more abbreviations. The students went to art class. In math, we learned about regrouping. We are setting the stage for double digit addition and subtraction. Please continue to practice math facts at home as it is critical that they can computate quickly as we add more digits! Most students have math homework. In Social Studies, we started a new unit. We learned about goods, services, and budgets today. While talking about budgets, we discussed things we NEED vs. what we WANT. We completed a worksheet in class and made some vocabulary cards, too. Hopefully we all get a good night's rest and are ready to learn again tomorrow!!!
